United States Maritime Commission C5 and R (Refrigerated) Type Ships
Four C5 type ships were built by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, Sparrows Point, Maryland to replace 4 ore carriers of the same name which were sunk in 1942. Four similar ore ships were ordered by the Maritime Commissiion, but the governement orders were cancelled and the ships completed privately. The R type ships were the first Refrigerated vessels built for that purpose for the U.S. Maritime Commission.
We have listed only the names used by U.S. Maritime Commission or U.S. Navy during 1939 to 1946. Some ships had additional names which are not given here.
