Mines remained in Pacific and European harbors as late as 1950. Army Transport Service mariners brought 200,000 war dead for reburial.

Merchant Marine: Last to Return

Mariners were in war zones long after the troops came home to enjoy the GI Bill.

Dozens of ships were sunk or damaged by mines after VE or VJ Day, and some mariners were killed or wounded. (contact mine at right)

Mariners were urged to stay in to earn "accrued benefits" which they never received.
