The Gulfstream Chapter is one of 80 nationwide chapters of the American Merchant Marine Veterans formed since 1988, when mariners of World War II finally won veteran recognition.

Our message is simple. We are a not-for-profit organization of American mariners dedicated to gaining recognition for the Merchant Marine's Service to our Country in War and Peace. While we have finally obtained Veteran Status for those mariners who served in World War II, in which thousands of our shipmates lost their lives, we still have much to do.

Since 1988, only about 90,000 of an estimated quarter million mariners who served during WWII, or their survivors, have applied for veteran status. We are actively seeking them and their loved ones.

We want to fulfill President Franklin D. Roosevelt's prediction, "As time goes on, there will be greater public understanding of our merchant's fleet record during this war." Most Americans to this day are unaware of the history of the United States Merchant Marine and its role in all America's wars since the Revolutionary War. We are dedicated to telling this fascinating story. We need your support to meet that goal.

Any Mariner, whether a veteran of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Gulf, or other "National Emergency," or presently active is invited to join. We welcome our Naval Armed Guard shipmates with whom "We Delivered the Goods." Spouses, widows and children of Mariners and Naval Armed Guard are welcome to join our fellowship. If you live on the East Coast of Florida, we would like to have you visit and join the Gulfstream Chapter of AMMV.

Gulfstream Chapter is a great place to meet your shipmates.

With the unanimous approval of the Gulfstream Chapter, we sent One Thousand Dollars ($1000.00) as a donation to the Uniformed Firefighters Assoc. Widows and Children's Fund to assist in some way the families that have lost so much in this disaster.

Maritime Day

Through the efforts of Gulfstream AMMV, the Merchant Marine was honored on Maritime Day by a tribute from the Mayor and various City dignitaries with the Dedication of a Memorial Plaque placed in Riverwalk which is the Cultural Center of Fort Lauderdale Fl. A most beautiful location with heavy pedestrian traffic from people attending the Arts.

Following that ceremony, the Mayor of the City of Dania honored the Merchant Marine Vets that have passed on in a Ceremony aboard a Coast Guard Vessel where a wreath was thrown upon the waters.
