Liberty
Ships Are There! The following cable from London tells a story of direct interest to every man and woman whose war job is connected in any way with the construction or operation of our American merchant fleet. Hundreds of american Liberty ships form backbone supply lines to beachheads. First supply convoy Normandy coast all Liberties. Some English ports packed with them. channel has become Liberty ship lane. Every U.S. shipyard represented in unending procession. Supply ships manned by U.S. Merchant Marine Officers and men carrying troops and materiel. Seamen, soldiers, stevedores, navy landing barge crew working teams unloading. You played an inportant, but silent part in preinvasion preparation. Our fighters can't have too much at the beachheads. Let's keep giving them all we've got. Signed E. S. Land |

The merchant seamen of
many of the United Nations: have played heroic roles on plodding, weapon-laden
convoys. The Panama Canal important in peacetime trade is even more vital
in speeding the weapons and the goods of war.Life
