Ships of Standard Oil of California
"SoCal," [now Chevron] -- since 1895
The Pacific Coast Oil Company,
later known as Standard Oil of California or "SoCal", and now
known as Chevron, was founded in 1895.
During World War II, SoCal ships
were appropriated by the War Shipping Shipping Administration. Socal ships fueled
battleships, aircraft carriers and troopships along the Pacific coast. SoCal
tankers towed concrete barges to the South Pacific and acted as floating "gas
stations" in the war zone.
Two SoCal ships were sunk during
World War II: the H. M. Storey and H. D. Collier. The W. S.
Rheem was torpedoed, but survived.
