Surrendered Sword of Vice Admiral Ugaki Awarded to Kings Point Academy

Friday, October 19, 1945The sword of Vice Admiral Ugaki who commanded the Japanese Naval Forces of Northern Honshu and Hokkaido, will soon be forwarded to the U.S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps Academy at Kings Point, N. Y. by General Douglas MacArthur as a "a memento of valiant services rendered by the sons of this Academy in our struggle in the Pacific."
In a wire to Commodore Telfair Knight, USMS, Assistant Deputy Administrator for Training, War Shipping Administration, General MacArthur said:
"I have directed that the surrendered sword of Vice Admiral Ugaki, who commanded Japanese Naval forces of Northern Honshu and Hokkaido, be forwarded to the U. S. Merchant Marine Cadet Corps Academy, Kings Point, New York, as a memento of the valiant services rendered by the sons of this Academy in our struggle in the Pacific."
Hundreds of Academy graduates were deck and engine officers aboard American merchant ships in the gigantic fleet that backed up every operation in the Pacific, including the final surrender and occupation of the Jap home islands.
