Maritime Commission motto Ships for VictorySuppliers to the Shipyards: "Members Of The Team"
Nuts and bolts and sub-assemblies, and a thousand other parts and supplies are furnished for the Victory Fleet by plants both large and small. As Admiral Land wrote to one manufacturer:

"The products you make are component parts of these vessels.... You are important members of the great shipbuilding team which is achieving an almost unbelievable production and thereby helping win this war... We are confidently counting on every man and woman to stand by, as you always have, until the last shot is fired."

And Adm. Vickery told a group of plant workers "I know it's not very exciting beveling plates all day, or turning out castings, or bending pipe. However, that's the way we get ships built. Without you, we would be lost...."

The big shipyards do not hesitate to acknowledge their debt to their many suppliers. Marinship, for instance, says: "There are 15 sub-contractors at Marinship, all real specialists in their lines of work.... Our combined sub-contractors in the yard do 60,000 manhours of work on each tanker and install 150 tons of material on each ship as well. The sub-contractor is tremendously vital to the success of our production.

"The Bethlehem Steel Co. has over 6,000 individual sub-contractors, many of whom in turn are served by other firms, so that a total of more than 30,000 enterprises are at work on Bethlehem's ship and other war programs.

Not all these plants are large. Hundreds of small manufacturing concerns are playing an important role as suppliers. During 1943, 50.2% of contracts over $10,000 awarded by the Maritime Commission went to plants hiring less than 500 employees. They received 2,462 of the 4,881 construction material contracts let during the year. Of 6,990 subcontracts let by shipyards working on Maritime construction, 4,733 were handled by small business firms. Of the 136 plants receiving the "M", 64 were concerns with less than 500 employees.
